Meet Steve Owens

Steve Owens ran his successful campaign for state representative in 2020 to help the Commonwealth reduce the impact of climate change, address Greater Boston’s ongoing transportation crisis, and ensure that every family has access to affordable housing and health care.

Growing up near Albany, New York, this son of a public school teacher first became politically active in high school, where he advocated for increased school budgets and progressive school board candidates. A longtime activist and leader, he spent twelve years as the chair of the Watertown Democratic Town Committee. In 2016 he was elected to the Democratic State Committee, where he helped the party enact reforms to increase voter participation.

Prior to entering elected office, Representative Owens spent 15 years as a consultant at IHS, where he helped public sector clients optimize their transportation using the latest data-driven analytics. He has applied this expertise both to his work on the Watertown Transportation Task Force and now in the House, where he seeks solutions to improve access to public transportation while helping reduce the state’s carbon footprint.

Representative Owens sits on several key House Committees:

  • Joint Committee on Financial Services

  • Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy

  • House Committee on Global Warming and Climate Change

  • House Committee on Steering, Policy and Scheduling
